The two tenets of what we do

Lately I feel I have small moments in which I can raise my head from doing and thinking just for a moment. It is incredibly stupid that I do not know that more often, but I accept that being stupid is part of being human and part of being a human entrepreneur.

Anyway.

In one of these moments of breath I was thinking that we are essentially consultant in a technical space and this means two things:

  1. We should curate more the consulting side. We should learn to improve how we communicate ideas to client, how we explain our solutions, how we collect feedback. We should also have better processes around that, but we need to focus on the techniques proper of being a consultant, not only on the software development techniques we love so much
  2. We should leverage the fact that we work on a technical space. By that I mean that the work that we do is based on the technical solutions and techniques that we learn, develop, and refine. This is a huge leverage, because we can build this asset and use it to produce a ton of value. We should focus even more and spend most of our energies improving even further the areas where we have already the best solutions available. We should become even more a choice so incredibly obvious that the clients working with us will feel like I they are getting a huge win, even if we raise our prices. This is not achievable on all we do, with the resources we have now. So we should de-emphasize the areas where we cannot become the best option by a large margin at this time.

We have a great luck: we have clients knocking at the door and this give us the opportunity to learn more and more. We should avoid being anesthetized and getting just used to do the work. We should keep learning, and refining the solutions we can offer. And for that we need to raise our heads more and more.
